Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

A GLP -study aquivalent to OECD 211 for the chronic toxicity to Daphnia magna was tested with Lanthanum trichloride hydrate (Bogers, 1995). The NOEC (21 d) was determined as 0.176 mg/L (LOEC (21d) = 0.406 mg/L), based on Lanthanum trichloride, anhydrous. Even if the recovery was low (nominal concentrations: 4 - 100 mg La/L, mean measured concentrations 0.15 - 4.82 mg La/L), the measured concentration steps were in agreement with the dilution steps and therefore reliable.

A further investigation on Lanthanum chloride, equivalent to OECD 211, with Daphnia carinata was published (Barry and Meehan, 2000). The test was performed using two different media: ASTM medium and a special, non-guideline Daphnia medium, which was extensively used in the testing laboratory. The results with the Daphnia medium showed inconsistent results, measured concentrations showed no increasing concentration series and mortality to concentration showed no relationship. In ASTM medium, a basic mortality to concentration relationship could be observed, but the nominal and measured La concentrations did not agree with each other: the difference arose from the lowest concentration to the highest concentration from a factor of 3 to a factor of approx. 600 (nominal concentrations tested: 100 - 1000 µg La/L, measured concentrations: 30 - 85 µg La/L). Therefore, the results from this source have to be regarded with caution and the results cannot be taken for the derivation of the PNEC.

Toxicity data for marine species are not available.
