Description of key information

The test item is readily biodegradable according to an OECD TG 301 A study. After ten days >80% removal were reported. The 10-day window was met. The result is confirmed by supporting studies.

The biodegradation of B-TEGME (88% pure) was investigated under GLP in a valid OECD 301 study (BASF 1999). This study was assigned the key study for this endpoint. The results show that B-TEGME is readily biodegradable. Other studies are available, which support the finding of biodegradation. Inherent biodegradation was reported by a OECD 302 A test (Shell 1999), which demonstrated that average 95% of the test material - containing 22% B-TEGME - was degraded within 3 days of exposure. Two further studies support the finding of biodegradation (Shell 1986). These studies were performed with DOT4, a mixture of methyl and butyl borated glycol esters, which contained 17% of B-TEGME and additives. It is reported that degradation was still proceeding steadily at the end of the Modified Sturm test. Degradation observed in these two tests may reflect partial or complete degradation of a number of components of brake fluid DOT4. Since B-TEGME is readily biodegradable, as demonstrated above, the simulation tests on degradation in water, soil, and sediment are not required as B-TEGME is not expected to persist in the environment.
