Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

As the parent compound rapidly hydrolyses in aqueous system the assessment of the biodegradability based on the hydrolysis product 2 -ethylhexanoic acid, which is readily biodegradable (according to OECD criteria).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
readily biodegradable
Type of water:
freshwater

Additional information

Parent compound 2 -ethylhexanoyl chloride (CAS 760 -67 -8): No experimental data are available for the parent compound. However, since the substance is known to hydrolyse very quickly to 2 -ethylhexanoic acid (CAS 149 -57 -5) and HCl (CAS 7647 -01 -0), the assessment of the biodegradability is based on the hydrolysis product 2 -ethylhexanoic acid (CAS 149 -57 -5)

No information on the biodegradation potential of the hydrolysis product HCL are available due to its inorganic structure. Therefore, the assessment of the biodegradability of the parent compund is based on the hydrolysis product 2 -ethylhexynoic acid. The acid is readily biodegradable according to OECD criteria (see below).

Hydrolysis product 2 -ethylhexanoic acid (CAS 149 -57 -5): In a ready biodegradability test according to OECD 301E (Modified OECD Screening test) using domestic sewage the DOC removal was > 90% after 28 days (OEKO LAB, 1998).

Conclusion:

Based on the available data, the parent compound and its hydrolysis product 2 -ethylhexanoic acid are expected to be readily biodegradable (according to OECD criteria).
