No key information has been identified to cover this endpoint. However, since the outcome of the CSA, using the current PNECsoil, did not indicate the need to refine the terrestrial hazard assessment, further testing is not required.

One study was identified as containing relevant and reliable information on the toxicity of lanthanum to soil macroorganisms. In the study of Wen et al. (2006), earthworms (Eisenia fetida) were added to soil samples from nine Chinese soils, in which total rare earth element concentrations (among which lanthanum) were determined. During 6 weeks of exposure, no mortality occurred in any of the soils. The highest lanthanum concentration was 71.9 mg/kg soil dw, whereas the summed concentration of La/Y/Ce/Pr/Nd was 162.28 mg/kg soil dw. These concentrations can be considered as L0 values, or the NOEC can be considered as being higher or equal to these values (endpoint survival). Although exposure was mixed (several rare earth elements), an indication is obtained from this study which lanthanum concentrations do not adversely affect earthworms. However, this study alone cannot be used to cover the endpoint.
