First-aid measures

1. Description of first aid measures

General advice:

Move out of dangerous area.

Consult a physician.

Show the safety data sheet to the doctor in attendance.

Do not leave the victim unattended.

If inhaled:

Move to fresh air.

If unconscious, place in recovery position and seek medical advice.

If symptoms persist, call a physician.

In case of skin contact:

Immediate medical treatment is necessary as untreated wounds from corrosion of the skin heal slowly and with difficulty.

If on skin, rinse well with water.

If on clothes, remove clothes.

In case of eye contact:

Small es can cause irreversible tissue damage and blindness.

In the case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice.

Continue rinsing eyes during transport to hospital.

Remove contact lenses.

Protect unharmed eye.

Keep eye wide open while rinsing.

Immediate medical attention is required.

If swallowed:

Keep respiratory tract clear.

Do not induce vomiting.

Do not give milk or alcoholic beverages. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.

Take victim immediately to hospital.

2. Most important symptoms and effects, both acute and delayed

Symptoms:

Product dust may be irritating to eyes, skin and respiratory system.

Risks: Toxic if swallowed or in contact with skin.

Causes serious eye damage.

Causes severe burns.

3. Indication of any immediate medical attention and special treatment needed

Treatment:

The first aid procedure should be established in consultation with the doctor responsible for industrial medicine.

Fire-fighting measures

1. Extinguishing media

Suitable extinguishing media: Water fog, dry chemical, foam, carbon dioxide

Unsuitable extinguishing media: High volume water jet

2. Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture

Secific hazards during fire-fighting:

Do not allow run-off from fire fighting to enter drains or water courses.

Avoid generating dust; fine dust dispersed in air in sufficient concentrations, and in the presence of an ignition source it is a potential dust explosion hazard.

Hazardous combustion products: Carbon oxides.

3. Advice for firefighters

Special protective equipment for firefighters: Wear self-contained breathing apparatus for firefighting if necessary.

Further information: Collect contaminated fire extinguishing water separately. This must not be discharged into drains.

Fire residues and contaminated fire extinguishing water must be disposed of in accordance with local regulations.

Accidental release measures

1. Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures

Personal precautions:

Use personal protective equipment.

Dust deposits should not be allowed to accumulate on surfaces, as these may form an explosive mixture if they are released into the atmosphere in sufficient concentration.

Avoid dispersal of dust in the air (i.e., clearing dust surfaces with compressed air).

Non-sparking tools should be used.

2. Environmental precautions

Environmental precautions: Prevent product from entering drains.

Prevent further leakage or spillage if safe to do so.

If the product contaminates rivers and lakes or drains inform respective authorities.

3. Methods and material for containment and cleaning up

Methods for cleaning up:

Keep in suitable, closed containers for disposal.

Sweep up and shovel into suitable containers for disposal.

Avoid dust formation.

Non-sparking tools should be used.

Handling and storage

1. Advice on general occupational hygiene

General industrial hygiene practice:

Minimize dust generation and accumulation.

Routine housekeeping should be instituted to ensure that dusts do not accumulate on surfaces.

Dy powders can build static electricity changes when subjected to the friction of transfer and mixing operations.

Keep away from heat and sources of ignition.

Advice on protection against fire and explosion:

Avoid dust formation.

Provide appropriate exhaust ventilation at places where dust is formed

Hygiene measures:

Avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing.

When using do not eat or drink. When using do not smoke.

Wash hands before breaks and immediately after handling the product.

2. Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities

Requirements for storage areas and containers:

Keep container tightly closed in a dry and well-ventilated place. Containers which are opened must be carefully resealed and kept upright to prevent leakage. Observe label precautions. Electrical installations/working materials must comply with the technological safety standards.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Engineering measures

It is recommended that all dust control equipment such as  local exhaust ventilation and material transport systems involved in handling of this product contain explosion relief vents or an explosion suppression system or an oxygen deficient environment.

Ensure that dust-handling systems (such as exhaust ducts, dust collectors, vessels, and processing equipment) are designed in a manner to prevent the escape of dust into the work area (i.e., there is no leakage from the equipment).

Good general ventilation (typically 10 air changes per hour) should be used. Ventilation rates should be matched to conditions. If applicable, use process enclosures, local exhaust ventilation, or other engineering controls to maintain airborne levels below recommended exposure limits. If exposure limits have not been established, maintain airborne levels to an acceptable level. Ensure adaquate ventilation, especially in confined areas.

Dust formation may be relevant in the processing of this product. In addition to substance-specific OELs, general limitations of concentrations of particulates in the air at workplaces have to be considered in workplace risk assessment. Relevant limits include: OSHA PEL for Particulates

Not Otherwise Regulated of 15 mg/m3 - total dust, 5 mg/m3 - respirable fraction; and ACGIH TWA for Particles (insoluble or poorly soluble) Not Otherwise Specified of 3 mg/m3 - respirable particles, 10 mg/m3 - inhalable particles.

Personal Protective Equipment

Eye protection:

Tightly fitting safety goggles

Wear face-shield and protective suit for abnormal processing problems.

Hand protection

Remarks: Impervious gloves

Skin and body protection: Choose body protection according to the amount and concentration of the dangerous substance at the work place.

Respiratory protection: If engineering controls do not maintain airborne concentrations below recommended exposure limits (where applicable) or to an acceptable level (in countries where exposure limits have not been established), an approved respirator must be worn.

Empty remaining contents.

Dispose of as unused product.

Do not re-use empty containers.
