Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

A study is available in which the effect of MgO2 as a bio-stimulant agent was examined by application of the substance to a microcosm simulating the sediment of aquaculture farms with a high load of organic matter. The dominance of sulphate-reducing bacteria (SBR) was used as one of the parameters to monitor sediment conditions. Other parameters assessed were redox potential and amount of organic carbon and nitrogen.

These experimental findings demonstrate that magnesium peroxide can function as an oxygen-releasing compound (ORC) and as such can improve the quality of organically polluted sediment by reducing the abundance of sulphate-reducing bacteria and the levels of sulfides.
