In accordance with column 2 of REACH Regulation, Annex X, section 9.5.1, long-term toxicity testing with sediment organisms does not need to be conducted. Testing shall be proposed if the results of the safety assessment indicates the need.

The direct and indirect exposure of sediment compartments is unlikely as the substance is readily biodegradable. The biodegradability of the substance is proved in a number of tests conducted under different conditions (aerobic, anaerobic) and in different environmental conditions (water, soil).

In the absence of toxicity data on sediment organisms, a read-across from pelagic effect values is possible as a screening approach (equilibrium partitioning method, EPM) (R.7.8.9.1 Laboratory data on toxicity to sediment organisms, Guidance, 2008). A PNECsediment(freshwater)=140 mg/kg dwt and a PNECsediment(marine)=14 mg/kg dwt can be calculated for MDEA-Esterquat C16-18 and C18 unsatd.

For the structurally closely related material, DODMAC (see detailed discussion in chapter 4.3.1) a PNECsed of 55 mg/kg dw was derived. The PNEC was based on the most sensitive sediment test result for the annelid Tubifex tubifex with an assessment factor of 10. (For comparison, the EPM results in a DODMAC-PNECsed of 6.2 mg/kg dw.)
