Description of key information
Direct Blue 273 is a dye and this may impact the experiments conducted on algae. For this reason, it has been judged as more appropriate in the assessment to use a study on Lemna aquatic plant.
Key value for chemical safety assessment

No data on Direct Blue 273 was available, thus the assessment was based on a read across approach, using Similar Substance 01, i.e. an isomer of Direct Blue 273 differing only for the position of a functional group on an aromatic ring.
In the available study on algae based on EU method C.3, effects of direct and indirect exposure to Similar Substance 01 were within 10 % at all concentrations, thus demonstrating that the colour of test solution may contribute to the final outcome. Consequently, this result was not used in the assessment.
