Description of key information

The substance Litsea oil (Litsea cubeba) is a Natural Complex Substance (NCS) for which typically 96.6% of the constituents is identified.

Abiotic degradation

Air: The UVCB substance (or each constituent) is not known to contribute to global warming, ozone depletion in the stratosphere, ozone formation in the troposphere or acidification.

Water: Hydrolysis is not expected to be of relevance due to the production method of the substance (steam distillation).

In addition, the UVCB substance is readily biodegradable, hydrolysis has therefore not been further assessed.

Biotic degradation

In a CO2 evolution test (OECD 301B, GLP), it was shown that Litsea cubeba oil is readily biodegradable (104%, 28d).

Bioaccumulation

The log Kow range for Litsea cubeba oil constituents (calculated using KOWWIN v1.67 QSAR) was found to be 2.06 - 6.3 (16.90% of the constituents has a log Kow >= 4). The potential for bioaccumulation strongly differs between constituents and cannot be concluded for the whole UVCB.

Transport and distribution

For Litsea cubeba, the range of predicted log Koc values is 1.622 to 4.251. This indicates potential for low to strong sorption to soil/sediment, depending on the constituent.
