Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Since no study assessing the toxicity of Fatty acids, C8 -10, octyl esters (CAS 91031-98-0) to algae is available, in accordance to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 Grouping of substances, a read-across to the main component octyl octanoate (CAS 2306-88-9) was conducted. Further justification of the read-across approach is given within the endpoint summary 6.1 and the analogue justification document in section 13.

The key study with octyl octanoate (CAS 2603-88-9) was performed according to OECD Guideline 201 and GLP using Desmodesmus subspicatus as test organism (Caduff, 2013). The test organism was exposed to the test substance in a limit test at a nominal loading of 100 mg/L, prepared as membrane filtered test solution. The exposure time was 72 hours. No significant effect on algal growth was observed. The EL50 based on growth rate is determined to be > 100 mg/L and the NOELR >= 100 mg/L.

Based on the structural and profile similarities of target and the source substance, the assessment of algal toxicity can also be considered valid for Fatty acids, C8 -10, octyl esters (CAS 91031-98-0).
