Results and discussion

Results of examinations

Organ weight findings including organ / body weight ratios:
effects observed, treatment-related
Histopathological findings: non-neoplastic:
effects observed, treatment-related
Details on results:
ORGAN WEIGHTS
The weight of the lungs was significantly higher than in controls, and in animals given titanium oxide or glass wool, at all times of observation, but only at the later observations with regard to the animals given iron silicate and olivine. A parallel development occurred with regard to the collagen content of the lungs following administration of P125.

HISTOPATHOLOGY: NON-NEOPLASTIC
In histological examination, the findings indicated that this type of particle causes a certain fibrillar reaction, but that the progressive tendency may be slight.

Macroscopic findings showed that administration of atmospheric dust (P125) from the furnace of the ferrosilicon melting works causes a reaction in the experimental animals. Even if the pathological changes did not progress to more advanced stages in the course of the observation period, they were sufficiently pronounced to indicate the presence of reactions in the lungs.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Executive summary:

In Glømme (1966-67), rats were given intraperitoneally 40 mg of particles containing small quantities of quartz. The particles - named as P125 - were round in shape, and 96% of the particles were less than 0.2 micron. Even if the pathological changes did not progress to more advanced stages in the course of the observation period, they were sufficiently pronounced to indicate the presence of reactions in the lungs.
