Description of key information

According to column 2 of Annex VII of Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 explosive properties have not to be expected. The DSC measurement in a closed crucible up to 500 °C showed an exothermal decomposition of  100 J/cal, which is far below  500 J/cal.

A study was conducted according to Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 method A.14. As a screening method for the determination of explosive properties a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) under nitrogen was performed. The DSC-measurement in a closed glass crucible showed an endothermic effect in the temperature range of 130 - 160 °C. At a temperature of 400 °C the measurement was stopped due the high pressure caused by the evaporation of the test item. An additional run in a closed stainless steel crucible was performed. The measurement showed an endothermic effect in the temperature range of 125 - 160 °C and an exothermal decomposition in the temperature range 430 - 500 °C with energy of 100 J/g. The heat of decomposition was below 500 J/g. Therefore the test on explosive properties was not necessary.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the results of the "explosive properties" test , the test item cyanuric chlorid is not classified according to Directive 67/548/EEC (DSD) and Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP) with respect to explosiveness.
