Description of key information

Four studies involving arthropods were used in developing the soil PNEC.  The results demonstrate that EC10 and NOEC values range from 82 to 205 mg/kg.

Four studies are available for the effects of LAS on soil arthropods. In the first, groups ofH. assimilisandH. aculeiferwere exposed for 21 days and the number of offspring counted. Based on reproduction, The EC10 forH. assimiliswas 100 mg/kg dry weight, and the EC10 forH. aculeiferwas 82 mg/kg dry weight. In the second study, groups ofFolsomia fimetariawere exposed in three different soil types for 21 days and the number of adult and juvenile organisms counted. Another test was done to compare the toxicity of three LAS salts, Na, Ca, and Mg, in one soil type (sandy). There was little variation in toxicity among the three soil types and in the three salt species. The EC10 forFolsomia fimetariain various soils ranged from 85-93 mg/kg dry weight soil. In the third study, groups ofF. candidawere exposed to concentrations of 25-300 mg LAS/kg soil for 28 days, after which adult survival and reproductive parameters were examined. The EC10 based on reproduction was 205 mg/kg soil. In the final study, groups ofFolsomia fimetariawere exposed to nominal concentrations of 50, 100, 200, 400, and 800 mg/kg soil dw of LAS for 21 days. The resultant EC10 was 161 mg/kg soil dw based on reproduction.
