Additional information

Tin tetrachloride is classified as corrosive based on the extreme pH value of 1.6 and the high acidic reserve. In accordance with 67/548/EWG a substance that is classified on the base of an extreme pH-value should be classified as highly corrosive (R35) but current European legal classification classifies tin tetrachloride as only corrosive (R34). With regard to the presumed mode of action after contact to eyes and skin, i.e. the formation of aqueous hydrochloric adic (classified as corrosive; R34) this classification seems to be reasonable. The same applies for (EC) No 1272/2008 that classifies tin tetrachloride as Skin corr. 1B. Additionally, tin tetrachloride should be regarded as irritating to the repiratory tract.
