Description of key information

Ethylenimine was found to be corrosive to both skin and eyes.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin irritation / corrosion

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
adverse effect observed (corrosive)

Eye irritation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
adverse effect observed (irritating)

Additional information

There are no human data on irritation / corrosion of ethyleneimine available.

In skin irritation / corrosion tests all animals died within 24 hours after application of the undiluted test substance for 1, 5, and 15 min. Based upon the observed findings, ethylenimine can be estimated to be corrosive and very toxic by skin contact (BASF AG, 1961).

Application of 0.05 mL of the undiluted test substance in the eye of rabbits caused corrosion of the cornea and death of the animals. Renal injuries (proteins, erythrocytes, leukocytes and renal epithelium in the urine, increase of blood urea, renal papillary necrosis) characteristic for the test substance were observed after application of the substance to the eye of rabbits (BASF AG 1965).

Effects on skin irritation/corrosion: corrosive

Effects on eye irritation: corrosive

Justification for classification or non-classification
