No experimental data evaluating the acute toxicity of Fatty acids, C12-16 (even numbered) and C18-unsatd., methyl esters (CAS No. 1234694-02-0) to fish species are available. Therefore, data from a structurally related category member, Fatty acids, C12-18, methyl esters (CAS No. 68937-84-8) was used for read-across, according to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, Annex XI, 1.5. Both substances are fatty acids esterified with methanol, containing C12, C16 and C18 fatty acid C-chain lengths. Furthermore, the water solubility values (< 1 mg/L for both) of these two substances indicate that a comparable behaviour in water can be expected. Based on this information, it is justified to use the toxicity data from Fatty acids, C12-18, methyl esters as read-across for Fatty acids, C12-16 (even numbered) and C18-unsatd., methyl esters (CAS No. 1234694-02-0) in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, Annex XI, 1.5, for this endpoint.

One study investigating the acute toxicity of the read-across substance (CAS No. 68937-84-8) to fish is available (Guhl, 1992). This test was conducted according to ISO 7346-1, under GLP conditions. Danio rerio was exposed within a semi-static water regime to the test substance for 96 h, at concentrations of 100, 300 and 1000 mg/L (nominal). After the exposure period, no mortality was observed in control and treatment groups except for the highest concentration tested (1000 mg/L) in which 100% mortality was reported. Therefore, the LC50 (96 h) was determined to be 550 mg/L (nominal concentration). Nevertheless, the observed effects occurred well over the water solubility of the test substance (< 1 mg/L). Considering that the test material was directly added to the test solution without any further filtration step, the observed effects are expected to be caused rather by physical interference with undissolved test material (e.g. gill clogging) than due to toxicity.

Based on the above results obtained for the structurally related category member (according to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, Annex XI, 1.5) acute toxicity of Fatty acids, C12-16 (even numbered) and C18 -unsatd., methyl esters (CAS No. 1234694-02-0) to fish species is not expected.
