Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Hydrolysis studies show that isobutyric anhydride added to water rapidly converts to isobutyric acid. Thererfore, isobutyric acid data is being used by read across for all environmental fate and ecotox endpoints.

Adsorption/Desorption

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex IX Nr 9.3.3, the study does not need to be conducted as the substance has a low potential for adsorption (log Kow < 3, see Sect. 4.7) and is readily biodegradable (see Sect. 5.2.1).

Based on a calculated log Koc of 1.65 (Koc = 44.7) for the charged molecule, isobutyric acid is expected to have a high mobility in soil (OXEA, 2010).

The results of Hemphill (1962) are not suited to assess the adsorption of isobutyric acid to soils (sorbents are pure clays).
