Additional information

1,4-diethylbenzene is not readily biodegradable. In two tests performed according to OECD 301C (Modified MITI Test (I)) and OECD 310F (Manometric Respirometry Test) the degradation observed was 0-2% (28 days) and -1.6% (28 days). Therefore 1,4-diethylbenzene will not be degraded in biotic media.

The tests OECD 302A and B are not recommended due to the poor water solubility of 1,4-diethylbenzene.

Test OECD 302C would be the most suitable one, but Japanese surface waters are not available outside Japan.

The testing strategy followed has been to perform first OECD 209 (toxicity to bacteria) and according to the results it has been decided to do OECD 301F. The Manometric Respirometry Test is recommended for the determination of “ready biodegradability“ of test items, that are not inhibitory to bacteria at the chosen test concentration. This choice is supported by the volatility of 1,4-diethylbenzene.
