Description of key information

Aluminium tri-sec-butylate is flammable based on its flashpoint of 26 °C (see endpoint on flash point). A separate test on pyrophoricity showed negative results and when exposed to water aluminium sec-butylate hydrolyses quantitatively to sec-butanol and aluminium hydroxides not forming flammable gases. Thus, the flammability of the substance is characterized by its flashpoint leading to a flammable classification.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

flammable

Additional information

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the flashpoint of 26 °C and its negative pyrophoricity properties and hygroscopic properties, forming sec-butanol and aluminium hydroxides upon contact with water the substance is classified as flammable liquid, Category 3 according to CLP (Regulation EC No 1272/2008) respectively Flammable R10 according to DSD (Directive 67/548/EEC). A classification as pyrophoric substance or substance reacting with water emiting flammable gases is not required.
