Acute toxicity testing of 2,4-Dichlorobenzotrichloride in fish indicated acute LC50 values of 50 -100 mg/L after 48 and 96 hours (Hoechst AG, 1989). Studies testing the biodegradation of 2,4-Dichlorobenzotrichloride and its degradation product, 2,4-Dichlorobenzoic acid, showed that both substances are considered to be not readily biodegradable under the test conditions (Hoechst AG, 1981 and 1995; unknown, 2010). According to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP) 2,4 -Dichlorobenzotrichloride should be classified as aquatic chronic 3, H412 (harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects).

For Daphnia magna an EC0 value of > 100 mg/L after 24 h (Hoechst AG, 1981) was experimentally determined. No experimental data is available for the evaluation of growth inhibition on aquatic algae. However, quantitative structure activity relationship (QSAR) analysis was performed using ECOSAR (version1.11). Since 2,4-Dichlorobenzotrichloride hydrolyses to 2,4 -Dichlorobenzoic acid within 2 hours (Hoechst AG, 1989) QSAR estimations were carried out with the degradation product 2,4 -Dichlorobenzoic acid. The LC50 value for toxicity against Daphnia was estimated to be 176.0 mg/L (48 hours) and the EC50 value for green algae was caculated to be 179.36 mg/L (96 hours). Based on available experimental results and the (Q)SAR estimations the fish is the most sensitive species. Therefore, classification and labelling based on experimental results in fish are conservative and valid. The performance of additional studies to assess the aquatic toxicity of 2,4 -Dichlorobenzotrichloride

are not needed.
