Description of key information

specific long-term ecotoxicity data obtained with In metal powder on the most sensitive organisms C. dubia and P. subcapitata prove that In metal powder is not chronically toxic to these organisms. No chronic fish test data were available on In metal powder, so, data obtained on soluble InCl3 is provided here on fish, as general information on ecotoxicity of the In3+ ion combined with the In(OH)3 complex. This information is used for the general conservative assessment of the PNEC, also for In metal. Given the proven lack of chronic aquatic ecotoxicity of In metal powder (see results on chronic testing with C. dubia and P. subcapitata), this general approach must be considered as very conservative. Since fish are not sensitive to the In-ion, it is anticipated that In metal powder has also no long term aquatic toxicity to fish.

Two good quality studies on InCl3 were available for two fish species. The lowest NOEC was observed for Oreochromis mossambicus: 1951.9 µg total In/L (single measured value). The NOEC for Pimephales promelas was 25000 µg total In/L. The discrepancy between the two studies is that a high loading of In (i.e. >15 mg In/L) results in a pH-shift. The study performed by Aecom (2012a) buffered the pH whereas Lin and Hwang did not report or buffer pH. This could lead to a pH drop which could contribute at the lower NOEC observed in the Lin and Hwang (1998) study compared to the Aecom study (2012a).
