Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

The dataset for aquatic toxicity is not complete for the target substance dehydroacetic acid(CAS 520-45-6). Therefore, read-across to a structurally related substance was conducted in order to fulfil the standard information requirements in compliance with Annex XI, 1.5, of Regulation (EC) N° 1907/2006. Dehydroacetic acid, sodium salt (CAS 4418-26-2) was selected as source substance and considered suitable for the assessment of the target substance Dehydroacetic acid based on its high chemical and structural similarityas well as its higher water solubility (worst-case).

With this read-across approach, data is available for all three trophic levels (fish, aquatic invertebrates and algae). For the short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates and algae reliable guideline studies are available for the source substance. These studies were performed according to internationally accepted guidelines and GLP.

The available data suggests that aquatic freshwater microalgae are the most sensitive trophic level, for which a nominal ErC10 (72 h) value of 23.9 mg/L (11.3 – 31.5 mg/L, 95% confidence interval) and an ErC50 (72 h) value of 32.1 mg/L (14.3 – 69.9 mg/L, 95% confidence interval) was obtained.The short-term toxicity test to aquatic invertebrates resulted in an EC50 (48 h) of > 100 mg/L (nominal).

The toxicity control in the biodegradation test (301 F) indicates that the substance is not toxic to aquatic microorganisms and resulted in a NOEC (14 d) of 38 mg/L (nominal).
