Description of key information

After evaporation or exposure to the air, glutaraldehyde will be rapidly degraded by photochemical processes.

The tropospheric half-life of glutaraldehyde was estimated using the AOPWIN program from Meyland & Howard from the Syracuse Institute, version 1.92. This program estimates the rate constant for the atmospheric, gas-phase reaction between photochemically produced hydroxyl radicals and organic chemicals. The estimation methods used by the Atmospheric Oxidation Program are based upon the structure-activity relationship (SAR) methods developed by Atkinson and co-workers. The Atkinson calculation method sums up the reactivity towards OH radicals of all structural elements. Using a 12-hours day and a mean daily OH concentration of 0.5E6 OH/cm³ a half-life of 8.213 hours was assessed (overall OH rate constant: 46.89 E-12 cm³/molecule sec).

In conclusion, after evaporation or exposure to air, glutaraldehyde will rapidly be subjected to photochemical degradation processes.
