First-aid measures

Inhalation:

Remove from exposure area to fresh air. If victim is not breathing administer artificial respiration according to your level of training and obtain professional medical assistance immediately.

-Skin contact:

Wash with soap and water and flush with water. Remove contaminated clothing and wash before reuse. Get medical attention.

-Eye contact:

Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while holding eyelid(s) open. Get medical attention.

-Ingestion:

DO NOT induce vomiting. Wash out mouth with water. Contact physician immediately.

-Advice to Physician:

Treat symptomatically.

Fire-fighting measures

Extinguishing Media: Carbon Dioxide, Dry Chemical or Foam. NEVER use a direct water jet.

Special Exposure Hazards:

As supplied, product presents no explosion hazard. When mixed with air and exposed to ignition source, vapors can burn in open or explode if confined.

Special Fire Fighting Precautions/Instructions:

Do not release runoff from fire control measures into waterways or sewers.

Water will not be effective in extinguishing a fire. Use water spray to cool fire-exposed containers and to reduce rate of burning, taking care not to spread the fire. Heat will build pressure and rupture closed storage containers.

Wear NIOSH approved self-contained breathing apparatus, and full protective clothing.

Accidental release measures

Personal Protection:

Chemical goggles or safety glasses. If skin contact or contamination of clothing is likely, protective clothing should be worn. Use neoprene or rubber gloves.

Environmental Precautions:

Prevent entry to sewers and public waters. Contain any spills with dikes or absorbents to prevent migration and entry into sewers or streams. No significant environmental hazard or adverse effect from human exposure resulting from the accidental release of this material is anticipated.

After Spillage / Leakage:

Do not empty into drains. Do not flush down sewers. Impound and recover large land spill; soak up small spill with inert solids.

Handling and storage

Technical Protective Measures:

Assure good ventilation to prevent flammable vapor formation. If mechanical ventilation is used, electrical systems should conform to national electrical code. Provide proper grounding.

Storage:

Store in dark, dry, cool, well-ventilated area. Purge air in the container with nitrogen. Store away from all heated sources, including direct sunlight. Tanks should be grounded and provided with adequate pressure relief valve. Storage in stainless steel or polyethylene recommended.

Handling:

Use only well-ventilated area. Mechanical ventilation is recommended. Both local exhaust and general room ventilation are usually required. Open only in well-ventilated area away from heat, sparks or open flame.

General Information:

Avoid all sources of ignition. Avoid any personal contact. Avoid vapor or mist inhalation. Storage and handling in stainless still, or lined steel, or glass, or polyethylene is recommended.

Decontamination Procedures:

No special decontamination procedures needed. Isolate, vent, drain, wash and purge equipment before maintenance.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Engineering Control Measures:

Provide general or local exhaust ventilation systems to maintain airborne concentrations below exposure levels. Regularly inspect all electrical and mechanical equipment used with or near toluene. Ground and bond metal containers to minimize static sparks.

Personal Protective Equipment:

-Respiratory Protection:

No special respiratory protection equipment is recommended under normal conditions of anticipated use with adequate ventilation. For emergency or non-routine operations (cleaning spills, reactor vessels, or storage tanks), wear an Self-contained breathing apparatus.

-Skin Protection:

Protective gloves and clothing are recommended. Viton or nitrile rubber offers acceptable chemical resistance. Clothing should be static free.

-Eye Protection:

Wear safety glasses with non-perforated sideshields for normal handling. Goggles or a full face shield may be necessary depending on quantity of material and conditions of use.

-Hand Protection:

Wear rubber gloves for clean-up work on machines, extraction hoods or similar.

-Others:

Wash hands before eating, drinking, smoking, or using toilet facilities.

-Additional Recommendations:

Emergency eyewash fountains and safety showers should be available in the vicinity of any potential exposure

Stability and reactivity

Conditions to Avoid:

Overheating, Heat, sparks, sunlight and open flame.

Materials to Avoid:

Air exposure causes explosive peroxide formation. Must be inhabited with BHT (2,6-Di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol).

Avoid strong acids and oxidizers. Nitric acid, Hydrogen peroxide, Hydrazine, Hydorxylamine.

Hazardous Decomposition Products:

Not known. When overheated or in fire, decomposition products may contain oxides of carbon and peroxide.

HAZARDOUS POLYMERIZATION:

Not expected to occur.

Disposal considerations

Product Disposal:

Disposal of liquid wastes and solids containing free liquids by land filling is prohibited in most jurisdictions. By high temperature incineration in accordance with National and International Law and Regulations.

Container Disposal:

Containers of this product may be hazardous when emptied. Empty containers may retain this product Liquid and vapors. By high temperature incineration in accordance with National and International Law and Regulations.
