Conclusion on classification

The ecotoxicological hazard of SAM-3 was based on the hazard profile of each of its ions, which were represented by the analogues NXL 104 and TBAB:

  1. SAM-3 was determined as not ready biodegradable as both NXL 104 and TBAB were not readily biodegradable.
  2. SAM-3 was determined as not toxic to algae as both the cation and anion were not toxic to algae (ErC50 of NXL 104 > 120 mg/L and ErC50 of TBAB = 722 mg/L)
  3. REACH Guidance R7b, Table R.7.8 -3 for salts states: If no data are available on a salt, effects may be read-across from the anion or cation, whichever has the most toxic effect. If the effect is related to only one of the ions, the classification of the salt should use the effect concentration multiplied by the salt:ion molecular weight ratio”.

    Based on the results of the studies with both ions, the effect of SAM-3 on aquatic invertebrates is related to only the tetrabutylammonium cation (the 48h-EC50 was > 120 mg/L for NXL 104 and 9.5 mg/L for TBAB). For the classification of SAM-3, the following effect concentration was thus calculated: 9.5 mg/L * 506.7/242.5 = 19.9 mg/L. According to Commission Regulation No 286/2011, Table 4.1.0 (b)(iii), SAM-3 should be classified as Category Chronic 3.
