Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

The study in biodegradation in water for the test substance 4 -hydroxybutan-2 -one (CAS 590 -90 -9) is considered as diregarded due to irreproducable documentation. To cover the endpoint weight of evidence of read-across and (Q)SAR estimations were conducted. Two studies on hydroxyaceton (CAS 116 -09 -6) with a OECD 301C and OECD 302B are avalaible and used for read-across purposes. Additionally, (Q)SAR estimations were conducted using VEGA and CATALOGIC v5.11.16 model 301B and 301F.

The weight of evidence of all considered studies and estimations reveals that 4 -hydroxybutan-2 -one is readily biodegradability.

In Article 13 of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, it is laid down that information on intrinsic properties of substances may be generated by means other than tests, provided that the conditions set out in Annex XI (of the same Regulation) are met. Furthermore according to Article 25 of the same Regulation testing on vertebrate animals shall be undertaken only as a last resort.

According to Annex XI of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (Q)SAR results can be used if (1) the scientific validity of the (Q)SAR model has been established, (2) the substance falls within the applicability domain of the (Q)SAR model, (3) the results are adequate for the purpose of classification and labeling and/or risk assessment and (4) adequate and reliable documentation of the applied method is provided.

For the assessment of 4 -hydroxybutan-2 -one (Q)SAR results were used for biodegradation in water. The criteria listed in Annex XI of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 are considered to be adequately fulfilled and therefore the endpoint(s) sufficiently covered and suitable for risk assessment.

Therefore, further experimental studies on biodegradation are not provided.
