Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Anode, copper is a complex metal bearing substance (section 1.2) and therefore, for hazard classification (in accordance to the CLP-2009 guidance), ecotoxicity data obtained from tests carried out with soluble metal species and expressed as metal ions (e.g. µg Cu/L) are compared to metal ions released (e.g. µg Cu/L) during the transformation/dissolution (T/D) tests. Considering that the intermediate contains several metals, releases from a broad range of metals were assessed during T/D tests. The acute hazard assessment was subsequently assessed using the additive mixture toxicity rule.

The ecotoxicological analysis was performed on 6 samples, submitted to T/D tests (section 5.6). The selected samples represent the 4 types of anode identified (see attachment-sampling protocol in annex 1.4). The ecotoxicological profile of these 6 samples and the additional read-across to the chemical composition of all anode, copper samples (composition limits - see section 1.2) was performed in order to obtain a classification that is relevant to the worst-case typical sample across industry (see attachment).

A detailed summary of the classification and the Arche software used for the translation of the classification to all samples is attached.

From the assessment it can be concluded that acute 3 is applicable to anode, copper. There is however no need for chronic classification and therefore, no environmental classification for anode, copper - grade 1 and grade 2 - is needed.
