Description of key information

Skin and eye irritating potential of UGI was tested in two separate tests. Respiratory irritation is not applicable to UGI, since no acute inhalation test could be executed.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin irritation / corrosion

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no adverse effect observed (not irritating)

Eye irritation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no adverse effect observed (not irritating)

Additional information

Toxicological testing was performed with UGI Exxaro sulphate slag, since this test material was chosen as representative material based on particle size distribution (smallest particle size as reported under 4.5 particle size distribution - k_Weidenfeller_2007) and on in vitro bioavailablity/bioaccessibility testing (highest bioelution pattern as reported under 7.1.1 basic toxicokinetics).

Justification for classification or non-classification

Skin irritation:

Reference Leuschner (2008) is considered as the key studies for skin irritation and will be used for classification. The overall irritation results are as follows:

erythema, 0-72h after application: mean score=0.0

oedema, 0-72h after application: mean score=0.0

The classification criteria acc. to regulation (EC) 1272/2008 as irritating to skin are not met since the mean erythema score after 24h was 0.5, hence no classification required.

Eye irritation:

Reference Leuschner (2008) is considered as the key study for eye irritation and will be used for classification. The overall irritation results are as follows:

conjunctival redness, 1h after application: mean score=1.0

conjunctival redness, 24, 48 and 72h after application: mean score=0.0

The classification criteria acc. to regulation (EC) 1272/2008 as irritating to eyes are not met since the mean score after 24h was 0.0, hence no classification required.
