Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

The toxicity of γ-butyrolactone (GBL) to microorganisms has been tested under non-GLP conditions according to methods that examine growth inhibition of Pseudomonas putida and Tetrahymena pyriformis. In addition, ready biodegradation and inherent biodegradation tests have been performed which provide insight into the degree of toxicity to microorganisms. For studies having a Klimisch score of at least 2, the data are as follows: No toxicity was observed at 1061 mg/L as part of an OECD 302B inherent biodegradability test (BASF, 1977), a 17 hour EC50 of >10000 mg/L was reported from a Growth Inhibition (Pseudomonas putida) test (BASF, 1988), and an IGC50 of 4518 mg/L was reported in a ciliated growth inhibition test with Tetrahmena pyroformis (Schultz, 1999). Given these results, it can be concluded that GBL exhibits a low order of toxicity to microorganisms.
