Principles of method if other than guideline:
The effects of phosphorous sources on growth and sporulation of two species of fungi. The source of phosphorous was varied by replacing the KH2PO4 of the basal modified Czapeck-Dox medium by an equal quantity of phosphorous in the other compounds and the pH adjusted. Flasks were inoculated in triplicate and incubated for 12 days at room temperature. Cultures were harvested and dry weights of the myselial mats were recorded, as was the final pH of the culture filtrates. Sporulation was observed from small sections of mycelia taken from each source at harvest time and rated according to the number of conidia per microscopic field.

The mycelial growth of A. macrospora was highest on sodium dihydrogen orthophosphate, followed by ammonium dihydrogen phosphate while it was least in sodium pyrophosphate. Sporulation was very good in dipotassium hydrogen phosphate, disodium dihydrogen phosphate and monobasic calcium phosphate. The growth correlation between growth and sporulation was 0.664, indicating a positive and significant correlation between them. The final pH of the medium was also positively correlated with growth and sporulation.

The mycelial growht of D. rostrata was highest in ammonium dihydrogen phosphate followed by monobasic calcium phosphate and least in sodium pyrophosphate. Sporulation was very good in ammonium orthophosphate and poor in tribasic and tetrabasic salts. The correlation coefficient between growht and sporulation was 0.411.

The higher basicity of the salts was not conducive to good growth of the fungi tested.
