Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Hydrolysis product: Octanoic acid: readily biodegradable (Closed bottle test; Henkel cited in ECB, 2000)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
readily biodegradable

Additional information

Studies on the biodegradability of octanoyl chloride are not available.

However, the test substance is expected to hydrolyse rapidly (t1/2 < 10 min) to form octanoic acid. Therefore data on the biodegradation of octanoic acid are presented.

Octanoic acid is readily biodegradable in a closed bottle test (Directive 84/449/EEC, C.6; > 90 % in 30 d; Henkel cited in ECB, 2000).
