Materials and methods

Test guideline
Qualifier:
no guideline followed
Principles of method if other than guideline:
One-day-old adult female house flies and large milkweed bugs were injected with one µL of an aqueous solution containing 5 µL of 2-imidazolidinone or 4-imidazolin-2-one. Ten insects per treatment were held in a 125 mL Erlenmeyer flask and covered with cheesecloth. All treatments and analyses were made in duplicate.

2-Imidazolidinone is a temporary sterilants in house flies (Musca domestica L.), but produce permanent effects in large milkweed bugs (Oncopeltus fasciatus Dallas). Flies are able to eliminate large amounts of the compound through excretion and metabolism, whereas neither method of elimination was found in milkweed bugs.
