Two studies have been performed to evaluate biodegradation of Soltex® containing 85% asphalt, sulfonated, sodium salt (SAS). Both studies were conducted according to EC guideline C.4-E, “Biotic Degradation in Seawater: Closed bottle Method”. This method is the most relevant based upon the use of SAS in drilling fluids used in the marine environment. Soltex® Shale Inhibitor demonstrated 3-6% biodegradation in seawater in 28 days (TNO, 1991) and no degradation in seawater in 56 days when mixed in a bentonite slurry (TNO, 1993). These results indicate that SAS is not readily biodegradable in water or sediment.
