The chemical safety assessment according to Annex I does not indicate the need for long-term testing on fish species

No experimental data evaluating the chronic toxicity of Glycerides, C8-21 and C8-21-unsatd., mono- and di-, acetates (CAS No. 97593-30-1) to fish species are available. According to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, Annex IX, Column 2, 9.1, long-term toxicity testing shall be proposed by the registrant if the chemical safety assessment according to Annex I indicates the need to investigate further the effects on aquatic organisms. Glycerides, C8-21 and C8-21-unsatd., mono- and di-, acetates is readily biodegradable (83% in 28 days) and therefore, according to the Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, Chapter R.7b (ECHA, 2008), this substance will undergo rapid and ultimate degradation in most environments, including biological Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs). Based on this information, concentrations of the substance into the aquatic compartment from STP releases and therefore, the bioavailability to aquatic organisms, are expected to be low. The acute tests performed with fish (Weyers, 2007 and Richter, 2012), aquatic invertebrates (Weyers, 2007) and algae (Weyers, 2007) and the chronic test conducted with aquatic invertebrates (Richter, 2012) showed no adverse effects of the substance at the tested concentrations. Regarding the results of the acute tests performed on fish and aquatic invertebrates, there is no evidence showing that fish species will be more sensitive to the effects of Glycerides, C8-21 and C8-21-unsatd., mono- and di-, acetates than Daphnia magna. Due to this fact, the ready biodegradable nature of the substance, its lack of acute and chronic toxicity to aquatic organisms and considering animal welfare, long-term toxicity to fish species is not deemed necessary.
