Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

If released into water, ethylviolet-cation is poorly biodegradable and acetate is readily biodegradable.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

In water the test substance dissociates into the ethylviolet-cation and acetate.

Acetate is readly biodegradable.

The ethylviolet-cation has a triarylmethane structure. These structures are known to be poorly biodegradable: A BASF study with the highly similar analogue substance 1 according to OECD 301 E showed a DOC removal of 10 - 20% DOC in 28 days. Studies on the biodegradation of other triarylmethane dyes (Cha et al. 2001, Yatome et al. 1993) indicated that only minor parts of the C-backbone are susceptible to biodegradation. The low biodegradation potential of the test substance is confirmed in a catabol calculation for the ethylviolet-cation predicting 0 % degradtion in 28 d (BASF SE 2010).

The scientific literature as well as the QSAR calculation are therefore in good agreement with the BASF study.
