Additional information

Data on the short-term toxicity of Fatty acids, soya, 2-ethylhexyl esters (CAS 93572-14-6) to aquatic invertebrates are not available.
The assessment was therefore based on studies conducted with the structurally analogue substances 2-ethylhexyl oleate (CAS 26399-02-0) and Fatty acids, C8-16, 2-ethylhexyl esters (CAS 135800-37-2), as part of a read across approach, which is in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, Annex XI, 1.5. Further justification is given within the overall summary chapter 6.1 and within the analogue justification section 13.
The short-term toxicity of 2-ethylhexyl oleate (CAS 26399-02-0) was tested according to the EU-method C.2 considering the VCI concept draft for the acute testing of poorly soluble substances from 1994-01-31. In a first approach insoluble substance particles were not removed from the test solution. After an exposure period of 48 hours immobilization rates ranging from 0 to 100% (mean: 25%) were observed. In a second approach insoluble particles were removed from the test solution by filtration. Effects on Daphnia magna were not observed. Thus, the observed immobilization of the Daphnids was presumably due to physical effects (e.g. agglutination of gills). Therefore an EC50 (48h) > 100 mg/L (nominal) was determined. The toxicity of Fatty acids, C8-16, 2-ethylhexyl esters (CAS 135800-37-2) to Daphnia magna was investigated in a study following EU-method C.2 (Wierich, 1998). The study was set up as a static test under GLP conditions. The toxicity of the substance was tested in two approaches. In a first approach the test solution was not filtered and undissolved test remained in the solution, whereas in a second approach the test solution was filtered. The substance concentration of both test solutions was determined analytically. In the unfiltered test solution (12.41 mg/L, measured) an average of 50% of the test animals was immobilized by physical effects. No effects on the mobility were observed in the filtered test solutions (0.04 mg/L, measured). Thus an EC50(48h) >100 mg/L (nominal) was reported.
Thus, based on the above mentioned result, and due to the structural and profile similarities of the substances, as are explained with in the overall endpoint summary 6.1 it can be concluded that no toxicological effects on aquatic invertebrates are expected up to the limit of water solubility for Fatty acids, soya, 2-ethylhexyl esters (CAS 93572-14-6).
