Three studies were carried out to assess the biodegradation properties of the test item. In the key study, the ready biodegradability of the test item was determined with a non adapted activated sludge in the Manometric Respirometry Test for a period of 28 days. The study was conducted according to OECD guideline 301 F. 5-Ethyl-2-methylpyridine showed a mean biodegradation rate of 2% (ThOD NH4) and 1.5% (ThOD NO3) and is considered to be not readily biodegradable.

In the supporting study ready biodegradation was tested according to OECD Guideline 301 E (Ready biodegradability: Modified OECD Screening Test). The test item was determined ready biodegradable, but failing the 10-day window. In a supporting study according to OECD 302 B (Zahn-Wellens test) the test item showed inherent biodegradation, with 98.7 % degradation in 21 days.
