Specific details on test material used for the study:
The test item was mixed prior to the study by the test facility in equal parts from the following three subsamples:

Subsample 1:
Supplier: Befesa Aluminio S.L
Carreta Luncaha- Asúa 13
48950 Erandio (Vizcaya), Spain
Batch No.: Paval Nov 2020
Appearance: Grey solid
Storage conditions: Ambient temperature (10 °C to 30 °C)
Expiry date: November 19, 2021

Subsample 2:
Supplier: RAFFMETAL SPA
Via Malpaga 82
25070 Casto (BS), Italy
Batch No.: Rapal01 Nov 2020
Appearance: Grey solid
Storage conditions: Ambient temperature (10 °C to 30 °C)
Expiry date: December 16, 2021

Subsample 3:
Supplier: Intals SPA
Via Schievano 7
20100 Milano (MI), Italy
Batch No.: Argalum Dec 2020
Appearance: Grey solid
Storage conditions: Ambient temperature (10 °C to 30 °C)
Expiry date: January 11, 2022
Parameter:
other: DSC thermal stability
Remarks on result:
other: no exothermal effect up to the final test temperature of 500 °C in closed DSC measurements.

Two DSC measurements in closed glass crucibles showed an endothermal effect in the temperature range of 70 – 310 °C. No further endothermal or exothermal effects were observed up to the final temperature of 500 °C.

Graphical presentation of the DSC runs is given on page 8 (Figure 1). The results are summarized in Table 1.

The test item showed no exothermal effect up to the final test temperature of 500 °C in closed DSC measurements.

Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met
Conclusions:
The test item showed no exothermal effects up to the final test temperature (500 °C). Based on the result of the DSC measurement in combination with the well-known properties of aluminium oxide (major component) and experience in handling and use of the test item it can be assumed that the test item has no explosive properties.
Executive summary:

The test item 'Aluminium, magnesium and silicon oxides and hydroxides from refinement of aluminium salt slag residues' showed no exothermal effects up to the final test temperature (500 °C).

Based on the thermal stability, the composition and handling and use experience the test item 'Aluminium, magnesium and silicon oxides and hydroxides from refinement of aluminium salt slag residues' had no explosive properties in the sense of the European Commission Regulation (EC) No. 440/2008, method A.14.

Description of key information

Based on the thermal stability (no exothermal effects up to 500 °C), the composition and handling and use experience 'Aluminium, magnesium and silicon oxides and hydroxides from refinement of aluminium salt slag residues' has no explosive properties.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Explosiveness:
non explosive

Additional information

Justification for classification or non-classification

The available data on explosive properties of the substance do not meet the criteria for classification according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008, and are therefore conclusive but not sufficient for classsifcation: the substance is not explosive.
