Similar biodegradation profile

Several members of the category with low molecular weight like isopropyl laurate, to high molecular weight like Fatty acids coco 2 -ethylhexyl esters were tested for their ready biodegradation in water. These experimental studies were performed according to OECD Guideline 301 based on respirometric measurements (Oxygen consumption or CO2 emission). Biodegradation results ranged from 67% to 91.7% biodegradation after 28 days. So the substances of the category are considered as readily biodegradable. Since these ready biodegradation tests are performed in very stringent conditions, it can be anticipated that these substances will disappear very quickly in the environment. Similar structures of the caegory members, and suitable enzymatic processes present in the inoculum explain the ready degradation of the tested substances.

Conclusion on target substance

Biodegradation was assessed for several members of the category according to OECD 301B/301D guidelines. Based on the results obtained on the category members, the biodegradation of the target substance, Ethyl Caprate, was considered to be ≥ 67% within 28 days and this substance is considered as readily biodegradable.

Executive summary:

According to the Regulation (EC) NO. 1907/2006, Annex XI, 1.5, A read-across category for short chain fatty acid was performed in order to provide informations on ethyl decanoate CAS 110-38-3.

This category was based on common and shared physico-chemical and structural properties as:

-       common functional group,

-       common precursors and the likelihood of common impurities resulting from common process of manufacturing,

-       chemically structurally similar breakdown products obtained via the same biological processes into the organisms, and

-       constant pattern in the changing of the potency of the properties across the category.

Experimental studies showed that several members of the category are readily biodegradable according to OECD 301 guidelines based on oxygen consumption or CO2 emission. Similar structures of the members and suitable enzymatic processes present in the inoculum explain the ready degradation of the tested substances. Based on the results available through the category approach and according to the CLP criteria, the registered substance “Ethyl decanoate” was considered as readily biodegradable with a level of biodegradation ≥ 67% within 28 days in ready biodegradation tests.

Justification and rationale of the category approach for Ethyl caprate

This category group covers fatty acid chains linked to alcohols via an ester function. It includes mono-constituent substances and UVCB substances with varying fatty acid chain lengths from C8 to C18-unsaturated and alcohol types (including ethanol, isopropanol, octanol, hexanol and 2-ethylhexanol). This category group was made in order to provide sufficient information for physico-chemical, environmental, ecotoxicological and toxicological characterization of ethyl decanoate (CAS 110-38-3). Some data on the target substance of the category are available.

Available studies for biodegradation in water: screening tests assessment

Isopropyl laurate CAS 10233 -13 -3

One key study is available. The experimental study was performed according to OECD 301 D in order to assess the biodegradation of the substance isopropyl laurate. The biodegradation of 7.1 mg/L of the test substance was monitored for 28 days, based on the O2 consumption in presence of domestic activated sludge. After 28 days, 67% of the initial test substance was degraded. The test substance was considered as ready biodegradable.

Octyl octanoate CAS 2306-88-9

One key study is available. The experimental study was performed according to OECD 301 D in order to assess the biodegradation of the substance octyl octanoate. The biodegradation of 2 mg/L of the test substance was monitored for 28 days, based on the O2 consumption, in presence of a activated sludge. After 28 days, 89.7% of the initial test substance was degraded. The test substance was considered as ready biodegradable.

Isopropyl myristate CAS 110 -27 -0

Three reliable studies are available on biodegradation with the substance Isopropyl myristate. Ready biodegradability of Isopropyl myristate was tested in a CO2-evolution test according to OECD 301B and to GLP . The biodegradation of 9.45 mg/L DOC of the test substance was monitored for 28 days. After 28 days, 91.4% of the initial test substance was degraded. This is consistence with supporting studies where 10 to 20 mg/L DOC were degraded to 81.7 and 90% respectively after 28 days (equivalent to OECD 301B).

2 -ethylhexyl laurate CAS 20292-08-4

One study is available. The experimental study was performed according to OECD 301B in order to assess the biodegradation of the substance 2-ethylhexyl laurate. The biodegradation of 9.73 mg/L of the test substance was monitored for 28 days, based on the CO2 evolution and C analysis, in presence of a secondary effluent of activated sludge plant. After 28 days, 91.7% of the initial test substance was degraded. The test substance was considered as ready biodegradable.

Fatty acids, coco, 2 -ethylhexyl esters CAS 92044-87-6

Two reliables and relevant studies are available to assess the biodegradation of the fatty acids, coco, 2 -ethylhexyl esters. The two experimental studies were performed according to OECD TG 301B. The key study was performed with secondary effluent of unacclimatised activated sludge plant. 9.96 mg/L of test substance was monitored during 28 days, based on CO2 evolution and C analysis. The supporting study was performed with domestic activated sludge. 10 mg /L of test item was assessed during 28 days, based on the CO2 evolution. Respectively 90% and 69% of the test substances was degraded during the key and supporting studies. Based on these results, the test susbtance was considered as ready biodegradable.

Conclusion

According to the Regulation (EC) NO. 1907/2006, Annex XI, 1.5, a Read-Across Category for " Medium Chain Fatty Acid (from C8 to C18 unsat.) and alcohol esters (from C2 to C8) was performed in order to provide information on Ethyl Caprate.

This category was based on common and shared properties as:

- common functional group,

- common precursors and the likelihood of common impurities resulting from common process of manufacturing,

- chemically structurally similar breakdown products obtained via the same biological processes into the organisms, and

- constant pattern in the changing of the potency of the properties across the category.

Several members of the category were tested according to OECD 301B/301D guidelines and these substances were found readily biodegradable, with values between 67% and 91.7% biodegradation within 28 days. The structural similarity of the tested substances, and suitable enzymatic processes present in the inoculum explain the ready biodegradation observed for the category members. Based on the results obtained on these source substances, the biodegradation of the target substance "Ethyl decanoate" was considered to be ≥ 67% within 28 days and this substance is considered as readily biodegradable.
