Description of key information

According to these results, dimethyl sulphide is considered as harmful to Daphnia magna. The calculated 24-hr and 48-hr EC 50 were respectively 72 and 29 mg.L.

In Boutonnet (1994), the acute toxicity of dimethyl sulphide was determined in Daphnia magna in accordance with OECD testing guideline 202 and GLP. 20 test organisms per concentration were exposed under static conditions. Immobilization was observed after 24 and 48 hours. At 48 hours, immobilization occurred in 5, 30, 15, 25, 45, 75, and 90% of the daphnids in the 0, 3.95, 7.22, 16.71, 31.61, 68.2 and 92.99 mg/L, respectively (initial measured concentration). The calculated 24-hr and 48-hr EC 50 were respectively 72 and 29 mg.L.

This is supported by Drottar (1999), which was conducted according to OECD test guideline 202 and GLP. Neonated Daphnia magna (total of 20 daphnids per concentration) were exposed to mean measured concentrations of 49, 97, 204, 416, 901 mg/L. Daphnids in the negative control group appeared healthy and normal throughout the test. Daphnids in the 49 mg/L treatment group appeared also healthy and normal. After 48 hours of exposure, mortality in the 97, 204, 416 and 901 mg/L treatment groups were 75, 100, 100 and 100%, respectively. The 48-hour EC50 value for Daphnia magna exposed to dimethyl sulphide was 81 mg/L.
