Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Short-term toxicity to fish

Experimental data on the acute toxicity of the Orasol Black X51 (ES 939-191-9) to fish are available from a semi-static, 96h-limit test on Zebra fish conducted according to OECD 203. No mortality was observed at a test concentration of 100 mg/L after 96 h (BASF SE, 2017; Rep. no.: 17F0074/16E023). It can be concluded, that Orasol Black X51 is with high probability acutely not harmful to fish (96h LC50 > 100 mg/L).

Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates

Experimental data on the acute toxicity of the Orasol Black X51 (ES 939-191-9) to aquatic invertebrates are available from a static limit test on Daphnia magna conducted according to OECD 202. No mortality was observed at a test concentration of 100 mg/L after 48 h (BASF SE, Rep. no.: 17F0074/16E023, 2017). Therefore, the 48h- EC50 is higher than 100 mg/L. It can be concluded, that Orasol Black X51 is with high probability acutely not harmful to aquatic invertebrates.

Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria

Due to 'difficult substance testing issues' the chemical safety assessment is based on the available data on aquatic plants other than algae (Lemna gibba, BASF SE, 2017; Rep. no.: 63E0074/16E025; see IUCLID chapter 6.1.6) in accordance with REACH guidance chapter R.7b (ECHA, 2017). Difficult property: Orasol Black X51 is strongly coloured.

Toxicity to aquatic plants other than algae

The toxicity of Orasol Black X51 to aquatic plants was investigated in a 7d growth test performed with duckweed (Lemna gibba) according to OECD TG 221 (BASF SE, 2017; Rep. no.: 63E0074/16E025). The ErL50 was determined to be >320 mg/L (nominal). It can be concluded, that the substance is with high probability acutely not harmful to aquatic plants.

Orasol Black X51 is strongly coloured. According to REACH guidance chapter R.7b (ECHA, 2017) the 7-d Lemna growth test avoids the problem since the fronds grow at the water surface.

Due to the 'difficult substance testing issues', the chemical safety assessment of Orasol Black X51 (e.g. classification, derivation of PNECs) is, therefore, based on the available data on aquatic plants other than algae (Lemna gibba, BASF SE, 2017; Rep. no.: 63E0074/16E025 in accordance with REACH guidance chapter R.7b (ECHA, 2017).

Toxicity to microorganisms

The assessment of the toxicity of Orasol Black X51 (ES 939-191-9) to aquatic microorganisms is based on the experimental data from a GLP short-term respiration inhibition test performed by BASF SE (2017; report no.: 08G0074/16G249) according to OECD guideline 209. Activated sludge of predominantly activated sewage was used as inoculum. No inhibition effect was observed in the replicate with the highest test concentration (1000mg/L, nominal). Therefore, the 180 -min EC20 was higher than 1000 mg/L.

Based on the experimental data, it can be concluded that inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriately low concentrations.
