Description of key information

Short-term EC50 and NOEC values for Vinyl propionate (CAS no. 105-38-4) for two trophic levels of the aquatic freshwater compartment (aquatic invertebrates, algae), as well as the ErC10 value for algae are available from GLP studies according to OECD 201 and 202.

Growth inhibition study aquatic algae (Desmodesmus subspicatus) (OECD 201):

ErC50 (72h): 5 mg/l measured concentration

ErC10 (72h): 0.94 mg/l measured concentration

Short term toxicity on invertebrates (Daphnia magna) (OECD 202):

EC50 (48h): 19.8 mg/l measured concentration

NOEC (48h): 11.3 mg/l measured concentration

Algae:

The acute toxicity of Vinyl propionate (CAS no. 105-38-4) to the green alga Desmodesmus subspicatus was determined in a 72 hour static test according to OECD guideline 201. The median effect concentrations (ErC50) of Vinyl propionate on the green alga Desmodesmus subspicatus was estimated to be 5 mg/l measured concentration after 72 h of exposure. The ErC10 value was determined to be 0.94 mg/l measured concentration after 72 h of exposure. The results of the test can be considered reliable without restriction.

Daphnia:

The acute toxicity of Vinyl propionate (CAS no. 105-38-4) to Daphnia magna was determined in a 48 hour semi-static test according to OECD guideline 202.The median effect concentrations (EC50) of Vinyl propionate on Daphnia magna were estimated to be 19.8 mg/l and 11.3 mg/l measured concentration after 24 and 48 h of exposure, respectively. The NOEC values were determined to be 7.39 mg/l and 7.58 mg/l measured concentration after 24 and 48 h of exposure, respectively. The results of the test can be considered reliable without restriction.

Conclusion on classification

The environmental classification of Vinyl propionate (CAS no. 105-38-4) is currently not harmonised according to the CLP Regulation (EC) 1272/2008. Based on available acute aquatic toxicity data, the lowest valid effect concentration for freshwater aquatic organisms is 5 mg/L (EC50 for algae). Based on the available acute data, the substance should not be classified for acute toxicity following Annex I, table 4.1.0a of the CLP regulation (there are no acute values <=1 mg/L). Based on available chronic aquatic toxicity data, the lowest valid effect concentration for freshwater aquatic organisms is 0.94 mg/L (ErC10 for algae). Based on the available chronic data, the substance should be classified Aquatic Chronic 3, H412 following Annex I, table 4.1.0b ii) of the CLP regulation (readily biodegradable substances with chronic toxicity >0.1 to <=1 mg/L).
