Description of key information

3 tests were conducted with Indium metal powder:

-a classical water solubility test according to OECD 105, giving a water solubility (at 20 °C ± 0.5 °C) of <1mg/l. this general test is considered less relevant for ecotoxicity assessment.

-a 24hrs screening transformation -dissolution test under strong stirring at 200rpm, at pH 6 and pH 8. This test showed that at pH 6, some slightly higher In concentration than the DL could be measured. The average Indium concentration measured at pH 8 was in all replicate vessels <1µg/l. From these results, and combined with the observations on In2S3, showing the same effect, it was concluded that the T/D of Indium substances in general is higher at pH 6; as a consequence, further testing on In metal and all other In-substances was performed at pH 6.

-a Transformation-dissolution test according to OECD 29 over 7days and /or 28 days with 100 mg/l and 1mg/l loading, respectively. This latter test is specially designed for ecotoxicity assessments and therefore considered most relevant for ecotoxicity of Indium substances. After 7 days, In measured at pH 6 was <1.0 µg/l; after 28 days, In measured at pH 6 was <0.01µg/l.

Based on these results, it is concluded that the In3+ ion dissolving from In metal powder readily precipitates out as In(OH)3 at pH 6, and is thus not present in solution anymore after 7 days and 28 days. Referring to the results obtained with InCl3 at pH 8, the same conclusion is drawn for the solubility at pH 8.
