Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Reliable short-term toxicity tests results are available for freshwater fish (Danio rerio), invertebrates (Daphnia magna) and algae (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata) for the registered substance, reaction mass of 3-(3,3-dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-5-yl)propanal and 3-(1,1-dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-5-yl)propanal and 3-(1,1-dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-4-yl)propanal. The relevant short-term values are:

Fish: LC50(96 h): 3.769 mg/L (measured, geometric mean)

Daphnia: EC50(48 h): 4.25 mg/L (nominal, supported by analysis)

Algae: ErC50(72 h): 6.75 mg/L; ErC10(72h): 5.41 mg/L (measured, geometric mean)

In addition, as no activated sludge respiration inhibition test is available on the registered substance, the reliable study performed on a source substance have been read-across for this endpoint. The source substance is a reaction mass of 3-(3,3-dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-5-yl)propanal and 3-(1,1-dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-5-yl)propanal. Both substances are multi-constituent substances containing isomers of alkyl indane naphthenic aromatic ring. The absence of the 3-(1,1-dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-4-yl)propanal isomer from the reaction mass in the source study is not expected to affect the outcome of the result for the target material. It's therefore considered appropriate to read-across available data to the target/registered substance. Therefore, the registered substance is expected to have a 3h-EC50 value >100 mg/L for activated sludge. The substance is considered non-toxic for the microorganisms in a water treatment plant.
