1. Reactive Groups

The appraisal of the molecular structure indicates that the molecule contains an olefinic group and several aromatic rings which might be associated with explosive properties according to the UN Recommendations and the Handbook of Reactive Chemical Hazards. Other chemical groups associated with explosive properties as compiled in these documents are not present. In absence of other criteria or in case of reasonable doubt with respect to rapid decomposition, this finding would lead to the recommendation for experimental testing.

2. Oxygen Balance

The oxygen balance is not considered relevant for the evaluation of the explosive properties of this substance as it is not adequately characterised by taking into account carbon, hydrogen and oxygen only and omitting nitrogen and sulphur. The evaluation as based on

criteria 1 and 3 is fully reliable even without oxygen balance data.

3. Calorimetric Tests

The exothermic decomposition energy was determined using Differential Scanning Calorimetry in a closed, gold plated high pressure vessel (DSC). The calorimetric test is of special irnportance for the evaluation of compounds containing chemical groups associated

with explosive properties (see item 1). Three broad peaks were detected between room temperature and 500°C. The total of their decomposition energy was found to be about 151 J/g thus being significantly below the UN limit of 500 J/g. The onset points of the exothermic peaks were at about 224, 314 and 360°C.
