Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
August - November 2014
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
test procedure in accordance with national standard methods with acceptable restrictions
Qualifier:
equivalent or similar to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
Principles of method if other than guideline:
The test methods are described in another document. This does not impair the conclusion of the test results.
The principles of the test methods including their deviations to the guideline are described in detail in the field "any other information on materials and methods".
GLP compliance:
not specified
Key result
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Remarks on result:
substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period

1) 2',4'-Bis(methoxy-carbonyloxy)-2-brom-acetophenone could not be ignited by the 1000 °C hot platin wire, which was dipped for 5 seconds into the dried substance ("Bewertungszahl 1"). Only melting of the test substance was observed.

2) 2',4'-Bis(methoxy-carbonyloxy)-2-brom-acetophenone could not be ignited by an open flame hold onto the substance for approx. 10 -15 seconds ("Bewertungszahl 1"). Only melting of the test substance was observed.

3) 2',4'-Bis(methoxy-carbonyloxy)-2-brom-acetophenone could not be ignited when put into a red heated iron bowl for 60 seconds ("Bewertungszahl 1"). Only melting and foaming of the test substance was observed.

A mixture of potasium nitrate and 2',4'-Bis(methoxy-carbonyloxy)-2-brom-acetophenone was burning away with appearance of sparks ("Bewertungszahl 5"). "Gesamt-Bewertung: Gesamt-Bewertungszahl 3"

Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met
Conclusions:
According to the tests results 2',4'-Bis(methoxycarbonyloxy)-2-brom-acetophenone is non flammable.
Executive summary:

Three tests were conducted according to guidelines similar to guideline A.10.

2',4'-Bis(methoxycarbonyloxy)-2-brom-acetophenone was dried before testing. The dried test substance could not be ignited by a 1000 °C hot platin wire, which was dipped for 5 seconds into the substance. Only melting of the substance was observed. ("Bewertungszahl 1").

In a second test approx. 200 mg of 2',4'-Bis(methoxycarbonyloxy)-2-brom-acetophenone were put into a flat iron bowl and heated with an open gas flame burner for 10 - 15 seconds. 2',4'-Bis(methoxycarbonyloxy)-2-brom-acetophenone was melting but could not be ignited ("Bewertungszahl 1").

In a third test approx. 150 mg of 2',4'-Bis(methoxycarbonyloxy)-2 -brom-acetophenone and a 1:1 mixture of potasium nitrate and 2',4'-Bis(methoxycarbonyloxy)-2-brom-acetophenone were put into a red heated iron bowl for 60 seconds. 2',4'-Bis(methoxycarbonyloxy)-2-brom-acetophenone itself could not be ignited, only was melting and foaming ("Bewertungszahl 1"). But the mixture with potasium nitrate was burning away with appearance of sparks ("Bewertungszahl 5").

Therefore it is concluded that 2',4'-Bis(methoxycarbonyloxy)-2-brom-acetophenone is non flammable.

Additional information

Justification for classification or non-classification

Due to the test results 2',4'-Bis(methoxycarbonyloxy)-2-brom-acetophenon can be excluded from the hazard class "flammable solids" and does not have to be classified.
