No experimental data concerning the toxicity of methyl octanoate (CAS No. 111-11-5) to sediment organisms are available. According to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, Annex X, Column 2, 9.5.1, long-term toxicity testing shall be proposed by the registrant if the results of the chemical safety assessment indicate the need to investigate further the effects of the substance on sediment organisms.

 

Methyl octanoate is readily biodegradable.According to the Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, Chapter R.7b, readily biodegradable substances can be expected to undergo rapid and ultimate degradation in most environments, including biological Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) (ECHA, 2008). Therefore, after passing through conventional STPs, only low concentrations of these substances are likely to be (if at all)released into the environment.

 

The Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, R.7b (ECHA, 2008) states that in general, substances with log Kow or log Koc ≤ 3, are not likely to be adsorbed to sediment. Methyl octanoate has a log Kow value of 3.32 but its log Koc values range from 2.1-2.7. Therefore, its adsorption potential to sediment particles is expected to be low. According to the Integrated Testing Strategy (ITS) for toxicity to sediment organisms (present in the above mentioned Guidance) no testing on sediment organisms is necessary if the substance is not highly adsorptive or binding behavior to sediment particles is not expected. As methyl octanoate is readily biodegradable and has low adsorption potential, further testing on sediment organisms is not deemed necessary.
