The studies used to determine the biodegradation of both 2 –methylbutane and n-pentane (ExxonMobil Chemical-117594A 1996 and ExxonMobil Chemcial-157594A 1997) followed the OECD guideline 301F manometric respirometry test. The studies had some minor deviations from the guideline but these deviations were not shown to affect the integrity of the results. The studies were therefore deemed suitable for assessment and indicated that 2-methylbutane and n-pentane are readily biodegradable. In the study. 71.43% of the initial concentration of 2 -methylbutane degraded within 28 days and 87 % of the initial concentration of n-pentane.

Simulation testing was not required as n-pentane, 2 -methylbutane and hydrocarbon C5 are readily biodegradable.
