There are no reliable test data for the substance. Results are however available from short-term tests with freshwater fish (Oncorhynchus mykiss), invertebrates (Daphnia magna) and algae (Pseudokirchnerella subcapitata) for the related substance dimethylsilanediol (CAS 1066-42-8). The 96 -h Oncorhynchus mykiss LC50 was >126mg/L. The 48 -h Daphnia magna EC50 and 72 -h Pseudokirchnerella subcapitata values for the three organisms were >117 and >118 mg/L respectively. A NOEC of ≥118 mg/L was determined in the algal test.

Read-across is justified on the grounds that dimethylsilanediol is a close structural analogue of methyl(vinyl)silanediol, which is the hydrolysis product of dichloro(methyl)(vinyl)silane. The hydrolysis half-life of dichloro(methyl)(vinyl)silane indicates that, under conditions relevant to the acute fish toxicity test, hydrolysis to methyl(vinyl)silanediol and hydrogen chloride will occur. The properties of hydrogen chloride are well characterised and are discussed in the CSR. Its effects on aquatic organisms are limited to those that result from changes to pH in unbuffered media. Read-across from dimethylsilanediol to methyl(vinyl)silanediol is appropriate because both are small molecule alkylsilanols whose properties are dominated by presence of the silanediol group.
