Scope of the study:

This test method is designed to measure the potential for a liquid substance to increase the burning rate or burning intensity of a combustible substance when the two are thoroughly mixed or to form a mixture which spontaneously ignites. The liquid is mixed in a 1 to 1 ratio, by mass, with fibrous cellulose, the mixture heated in a pressure vessel and the rate of pressure rise determined. lt the rate of pressure rise time [ms] of the mixture (test item : fibrous cellulose = 1 : 1) is equal or shorter than the rate of pressure rise time of the reference (nitric acid : fibrous cellulose = 1 : 1) then the test item is to be considered as an oxidizing substance.

Executive summary:

The investigations were carried out according to the methods O.2 (for liquids) of the Manual of Tests and Criteria of the UN-Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods and test method A21. "Oxidizing Properties (liquids)" as described in Directive 2004/73/ECC (Official Journal of the European Communities L152 2004; see e.g.: http;//ecbfrc.ec.europa.eu/testing-methods/annex5/) respectively which is similar to the test according Transport of Dangerous Goods. The practical procedure is described according to in-house test method (S)21NO9002.01.
